Remote Access Request

Secure shell

If you have access to secure shell (ssh and slogin) on the remote machine it is recommended that you use them. Secure shell does not send clear text passwords across the network. Also, the login servers do not block remote secure shell connections.

For Windows - PuTTY or TeraTerm Pro with the TTSSH extension
For MacOS - MacSSH
For Linux - OpenSSH

If you do not have SSH access, and cannot install an SSH client, keep reading.

Before you go

If you want to access your account remotely be sure you stop by and see your System Administrator before you leave. Email requests to open remote access will be ignored unless you talked to your System Administrator before hand.

Required information

The information required for opening remote access is:

Warning: If the machine's IP address does not resolve to a hostname, the connection will be refused.

If you know the name of the machine you will be connecting from, let your System Administrator know. Since many ISPs (Internet Service Providers) use dynamic name allocation you can't guarantee a specific machine name. In this case, the domain name can be used. If you don't know the machine or domain name you can arrange with your System Administrator to email the information when you get to your destination. Also, let your System Adminisrtator know when you'll need the access activated as well as how long you'll need it for (break, week, term...) so we can remove unused access points and keep the list manageable.

This page includes a JavaScript function to gather the information to send to your System Administrator.
This does not replace the need to see your System Administrator.
