Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

Below are instructions for connecting to a remote server (e.g., remote.mtu.edu or dl-matlab.mtu.edu) from off campus.

If you are off campus, a secure VPN connection is required. NOTE: A VPN connection is not required for MTU domain member systems.

  1. Go to https://vpn.mtu.edu and log in with your MTU credentials.
  2. From the VPN connection page options select "Get an MTU address."

Continue to follow the instructions below for your operating system:

Windows Machines

  1. On a Windows 7 system click on the 'Start Menu Orb' button on the Windows task bar.
  2. In the Windows search input field enter the following: mstsc
    Note: The search results should produce an mstsc.exe menu item.

  3. Click on mstsc.exe or hit the 'Enter' key.
  4. Enter the appropriate remote server address (e.g., remote.mtu.edu or dl-matlab.mtu.edu) in the Remote Desktop Connection 'Computer:' input field.

  5. Click the "Connect" button.
  6. Enter the MTU domain, your username and password as seen here and click OK.
You have now successfully connected to the remote server.

Mac Machines

We recommend using CORD 0.5.7 http://cord.sourceforge.net for accessing remote.mtu.edu from Mac computers.

  1. Open the CORD Application.
  2. In the Quick Connect field, input remote.mtu.edu or dl-matlab.mtu.edu and hit Enter.
  3. In the login box, input your MTU userid and your ISO password

Linux Machines

We recommend using http://remmina.sourceforge.net/ for accessing remote servers from Linux and other Unix computers.

Remmina

  1. Start Remmina and create a new connection by selecting Connection, New.
  2. Fill in the connection profile.
    1. Basic
      • Name: any name, for example "Michigan Tech Remote"
      • Protocol: RDP - Remote Desktop Protocol
      • Server: remote.mtu.edu or dl-matlab.mtu.edu
      • User name: your Michigan Tech username
      • Domain: MTU
      • Resolution: leave default or select a specific resolution
      • Color depth: High color (16 bpp) except for slow connections
  3. Advanced
    • Security: RDP
  4. Click Connect to connect.
  5. When you are finished, save your work and log off.
