Helpful Hints

  1. Don't share your password with anyone.
  2. Don't change mice around (ie. don't swap them with one from another machine.)
  3. Don't put ``+ +" in your .rhosts file. This will give everybody access to your account and violates the MTU computer use policy.
  4. When you have a computer related problem, ask someone. Unix man pages can be confusing, and it can help to ask someone.
  5. Don't ``wall" a machine unless it's necessary.
  6. Always logout when you are done. Logging out and ``xlocking" or turning off a terminal are not the same thing.
  7. Never power down, or reboot a workstation. If there is a problem, see the lab consultant or the staff in the CEC.
  8. Don't play games on the equipment. Playing games on Tech equipment violates the MTU computer use policy.
  9. Disk space is shared with other users. Don't consume more than you need. Compress files you don't need in the near future. Delete files you no longer need. CEC provides facilities for having your files archived. Come to the CEC for more information.
  10. Do not make programs for the sole intent of annoying other users. This includes purposely slowing down a machine.
  11. If you loose any important files, come down to the CEC to have them restored. Files are backed up nightly.
