Connecting to M: drive over VPN

Windows XP

  1. Establish a VPN connection to Michigan Tech (Instructions, if needed, are here).
  2. Open up my computer and go to Tools -> Map Network Drive.
  3. Enter \\multidrive.iso.mtu.edu\multidrive for the server path, choose a letter to map it, and click Finish.
  4. A Windows login box will pop up and you will need to login with username MTU\<your username> and password <your ISO password>.
  5. You are now connected to your M: drive.

Windows Vista/7

  1. Establish a VPN connection to Michigan Tech (Instructions, if needed, are here).
  2. Open up "Computer" from the Start Menu and click on Map Network Drive.
  3. Enter \\multidrive.iso.mtu.edu\multidrive for the server path, choose a letter to map it, and click Finish.
  4. A Windows login box will pop up and you will need to login with username MTU\<your username> and password <your ISO password>.
  5. You are now connected to your M: drive.

Mac

  1. Establish a VPN connection to Michigan Tech (Instructions, if needed, are here).
  2. Open a web browser and navigate to http://idm.mtu.edu; log in if necessary.
  3. Click on the myMount link at left.
  4. Enter your username in the Show user(s) box, click show, then click the link Show Instructions for Mac OS X.
  5. Follow the instructions shown on the resulting page (switch to Finder, Go menu > Connect to server, enter server address as shown on instructions page, connect, enter user credentials, and click OK).
  6. Your Home directory should open in a new finder window.
  7. If you open the Connect to Server window again, the last connection should be remembered under Server Address:. Clicking "+" will add the connection to Favorite Servers, eliminating the need to enter the drive path again.

Connecting to the Michigan Tech VPN

Instructions for connecting to the Michigan Tech VPN and H: and M: drives are listed below.

Windows

  1. Open up Internet Explorer or Firefox and navigate to http://vpn.mtu.edu.
  2. Login to the webpage with your Michigan Tech username and ISO password
  3. Once logged in click on the second link, Obtain a campus address with MTUCIFS WINS settings (overrides local WINS settings). If this link is not available, click on the Get an MTU Address link.
  4. If this is the first time you are connecting to the VPN please follow the next instructions; if not, skip the following sub-step:
    Instructions for IE:
    1. You will be asked to install a ActiveX component. When this finishes, you can continue to the next step.
    Instructions for Firefox:
    1. You will be asked to install a Firefox addon to allow you to connect. Click "Allow" when prompted with "Firefox prevented this site (vpn.mtu.edu) from asking you to install software on your computer.
    2. When prompted to "Install add-ons only from authors whom you trust," verify that "F5 Networks Host Plugin" is the only thing under items to be installed and click "Install."
    3. Finally, you will be prompted to restart your Firefox browser.
    4. After your browser has restarted, you should now be able to connect.
  5. A pop-up window will appear with a message that you are establishing VPN connection to Michigan Tech. Once this completes, the text will change from pink to blue, and the message will say that you are now connected.
  6. NOTE: If you close this window, you will terminate the connection; this window must stay open but it can be minimized.

Mac

  1. Open up you preferred web browser and navigate to http://vpn.mtu.edu.
  2. Login to the webpage with your Michigan Tech username and ISO password.
  3. Once logged in click on the second link, Obtain a campus address with MTUCIFS WINS settings (overrides local WINS settings). If this link is not available, click on the Get an MTU Address link.
  4. If this is the first time you are connecting to the VPN please follow the next instructions; if not, skip the following sub-step:
    1. A window will pop up and ask you to install a plugin; click on automatic installation.
    2. An installer will pop up in your dock to guide you through the installation of the F5 client.
    3. Once this finishes, restart your web browser and start back at step 1.
  5. A window will now pop up stating it is establishing a connection to the Michigan Tech VPN. Once this completes it will show a status of "connected."
  6. You are now connected to the Michigan Tech VPN. NOTE: If you close this window, you will terminate the connection; this window must stay open but it can be minimized.
